HOW TO FIND YOUR PASSION

How does one find their passion? If you feel like you don’t have one and maybe don’t know what kind of career to pursue, I’m gonna give a very simple answer to you. You should do what you love. Why? Because life is short and you should enjoy it the best you can. Sometimes your passion is clear as day to you and you know exactly what you want to do with your life from early on, in which case you are very lucky. Most people have to work to see the light and it takes time and effort. You have to do lots of self-discovery and thinking by yourself. It might not be easy and that’s why there’s so many people feeling lost and spending their lives doing things that don’t matter to them at all. Getting to know yourself is always a good idea and it’s never too late.

What do you love to do? What are you good at? How are you spending your free time now or when you were a child? What inspires you? What kind of dreams do you have? Have you experienced flow and what were you doing? If you don’t know which way to go, it also helps if you know what you absolutely don’t want to do. Just work your way away from that while you search for what you really want.

Maybe it happens that there’s really no passions in your life. No need to stress about it, it means you need some fresh air: you must start trying new things. How else are you supposed to know what you like and don’t like? Get out of your comfort zone and surprise yourself. When you get an exciting idea, hop on it, and whenever your intuition says something, listen closely. I like to think that ideas are slowly guiding us to a new direction but only if we let them. Sometimes there’s too many and you don’t know which one to choose, that’s where intuition comes in handy. Listen to yourself and you’ll know.

Take a walk in the nature, it will help clear your thoughts.

It took me a long time to realise my passions. Sometimes it’s so obvious and always under your nose that you never even give a conscious second thought for it, even though you actually think about it all the time. Some passions have always been clear to me, like arts and motivational speeches for example. Only recently I realised that I’ve also been a writer all my life. Happy, mad, lonely or lost, no matter what I’m feeling I’m writing something. Any feeling will do, because I can get inspiration from everything. Even if I feel like doing absolutely nothing, I always find will to write about it: poems, song lyrics, blog posts or short stories. When inspiration hits I’ll write on notepad on my phone, sticky notes at work, diary, google docs, magazines, notebooks, printing paper or anything I can find. It’s always been a part of my life but I never thought about taking it more seriously. It just shows that your passion might be much closer to you than you thought.

” ideas are slowly guiding us to a new direction.. but only if we let them “

I do think there’s some passions that you should just keep it to yourself as a treasure. I love my plants, taking care of them and looking at all 70 of them and talking to them (yes I do talk to them… I’m a crazy plant lady and proud of it) and seeing them grow just gives me so much joy! But there’s a big BUT… I could never become a professional gardener like everyone says I should. It would add all this extra pressure on my dear hobby, I don’t think I could handle that. Some passions are meant to be kept as hobbies only and it’s okay.

Here’s one of my favourite ones: “string of turtles”

When we’re talking about which passion to pursue as a career, think about these things: is this something you’d like to focus on long-term? Does it get you excited to get up in the morning? Do you want to keep doing it even if no one else believes in you? If you get three yeses, you are on the right path. Your passion might be different and even a bit weird, but that’s good. Own it. No one else is going to do that for you.

When you are searching for your passion, remember that you don’t have to pick just one! There’s so many possibilities out there, and you can change careers as many times as you like. Some passions are short-lived, some are here to stay. When you try different things and find something that lights up a fire in your soul and you can’t get enough of it, then you know it’s real and you should follow that exact feeling.
