Greetings from Amsterdam! We just moved here from Helsinki a couple of days ago and it’s a new beginning that we had been waiting for this whole year. While I drop a few pretty scenery pictures I would also like to tell you why I think change and new beginnings are essential for us all, even though it might seem scary at first.
Do you remember the feeling when you last made a big change in your life and started something new? That excitement in your mind, butterflies in your stomach and a grin on your face? If it’s been a while since the last time you felt that way or have simply gotten everything you can out of your current circumstances, maybe it’s time to change things up.
I know it’s scary right? Even if you feel like your life is stressful, unhappy or boring, it’s still comfortable and familiar, and it’s tempting to stay where you are. The fact is, our lifestyle greatly affects the way we see the world and ourselves. Can we afford not to listen to our intuition when it announces that it’s time for something different? What would our lives look like if we ignored all clear signs that we should change our direction? What would settling do to us?
Well you can often see it – it shines through. I’ve met many people that are working in jobs or living in situations they have already grown out of long ago. It’s like wearing a shoe that’s way too small. You can feel it all over that person’s spirit – it’s on their face, the way they carry themselves, the way they speak. For some reason these people have forgotten themselves and neglected their personal development. Change can be scary, but what settling can do is even scarier.
How to never end up there?
The longer we stay put, the harder it is to leave. If you already know how the path you’re on will go and it’s not what you’re looking for, you might as well take a risk and try something different.
Don’t let excuses get in your way. It’s easy to start thinking about the “what ifs” and the “maybe I can’ts”. Trust yourself and your idea of what kind of life you want to live. You never have to have the end result figured out, you just have to know how the next chapter starts. Anything you try has two options: either you find what you want or you find what you don’t want, and either way you still win: more experience, more clarity.
You can create a new beginning – now
Some people have a new beginning once a year when January comes along. I have a new beginning every month. Sometimes every week, sometimes everyday. I don’t wait for New Years or Mondays, I start fresh when I feel like it. I change everyday, I evolve, I move on.
It’s not always easy and at times I have to kick my own ass and say: Nora, it’s time to stop dwelling on the past, it has nothing new to serve. It’s okay to step back, give yourself time to collect your thoughts and wonder which way to go, but life keeps going, and it is now.
I believe something NEW keeps us mentally alive. Do you want to read a book if you already know how the story goes? Not really, cause then the excitement is gone. A movie where you can guess the ending is a lame movie and it leaves you wishing someone had used their imagination. Your life is like a movie, you are the star AND the director because it’s your story. Could you use some more imagination?
It is so necessary and even healthy to renovate your life. Just like houses can get rusty, mouldy and out-of-date, so can we! Just like small trees, we need winds and storms to help us grow stronger roots. New situations make us stronger, braver and more confident. I think we should always do whatever makes us trust ourselves more. If you have a chance to make a better version of yourself, why wouldn’t you? Even better, why wouldn’t you create those chances?
Right now is the time to work so that the next day/week/month/year is filled with excitement. Rome wasn’t built in one day either, so try taking small steps and don’t beat yourself up if you feel like running back to your comfort-zone real fast. (Happened to me already! Still alive!) It’s not easy, but then again, nothing worth having is. You always know next time the step will be a little bit easier to take, and the time after that, and you’ll remember why you’re here after all. To live, to change, to experience. To grow.
Life is about change. We can’t and won’t stay the same forever. Nothing does. You can only learn to appreciate the change and trust that you can always have a new beginning. Whatever that is – a new hobby, a lifestyle, a job, a place to live or perhaps a new dream?
What kind of magic and fresh air could this autumn bring to you? Tell me in the comments! 🙂
